At the full August branch meeting, during a break in a very busy agenda, branch Vice President Cllr Raymond Goddard made presentations to members and honorary members.
The photo shows L-R Tony Whatmore, branch Public Relations Officer, Mrs Jan Harper, branch Welfare Officer, Cllr Ray Goddard, Mrs Marjorie Goddard, Mrs Brenda Coaster, and Mrs Eileen Hendrie with their framed certificates.
Jan Harper and Tony Whatmore received Special Achievement awards for their services to the branch, and Jan also received a commemorative Merchant Navy medal and miniature in memory of her late husband Harry (NZSC).
Secretary Dave Buckworth told the meeting that since the branch had been formed in 1993, he had never known the branch have so much publicity in the local papers, all thanks to Tony.
Similar praise also goes to Mrs Harper, as since she took on the welfare position, accolades have come flooding in regarding her work with the branches ill and infirm members. Her work, apart from home visits, also includes making sure that every ill member has hospital and doctors' appointments kept and, where necessary, ambulances booked to transport them to and from their appointments. The local Redcar and Cleveland social services and James Cook University Hospital recognise Jan as she goes about her work. One call she makes regular to a member sees her returning home with eggs from the allotment and various jars of home made jam.
The three ladies to the right of the photo received Honorary membership certificates Mrs Marjorie Goddard wife of the Vice President, Mrs Brenda Coaster wife of the branch Treasurer and Mrs Eileen Hendrie wife of one of the branch's two Standard Bearers. These ladies attend meetings on a regular basis with their husbands and the next step forward hopefully will be the setting up of a ladies section under the umbrella of the branch. If successful, they will work towards helping with the branch's Welfare and Remembrance Fund.
At the same event branch member Jack Robson (engineer with Furness Withy) presented beautiful hand made pens to the members of the top table as well as to Jan Harper and Tony Whatmore.
