Branch News and Forthcoming Events


To mark Merchant Navy Day, the branch always start a week early by holding a Flag Day in Redcar High Street, which, this year, despite the weather and the economic climate did very well.

Due to the esplanade works in Redcar it was not possible to hold the service on the seafront and so the memorial service took place on the 4th September in the Garden of Remembrance, Coatham Road.

On Wednesday 20th July, the Dormanstown/Redcar Branch held its annual maritime get together in the Redcar Citizens and Priory club. Visitors came from the Hull independent Merchant Navy Association (IMNA), the local Royal Navy Association, the Lifeboat Station, Coast Watch and local ex-merchant seamen.

At the August branch meeting, branch Vice President Cllr Raymond Goddard made presentations to Tony Whatmore, branch Public Relations Officer, Mrs Jan Harper, branch Welfare Officer, Mrs Marjorie Goddard, Mrs Brenda Coaster, and Mrs Eileen Hendrie.

In keeping with many other maritime organisations throughout the country, the branch held its Sea Sunday service on the 10th July. The service was held at St Peter's Church, Redcar.

A raffle took place at the Stockton Arms, Redcar for a signed Middlesbrough FC football, to raise funds for the Birger Anchor memorial.

The members of the branch visit Whitby 3 or 4 times per year. On this occasion a plaque was presented by the branch to the Whitby Friendship Rowing Club in appreciation of their hospitality.

Forthcoming Events

As part of the continuing collaboration of merchant seamen's Associations in the north east the branch will be visiting the Hull Independent Merchant Navy Association to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment, socialising and "swinging the lamp".
